A local school swim team will be competing in the 2018 English School Swimming Association Finals this month, with support from a St Ives business.

St Uny Church of England Academy Swimming Team 2018, consisting of 7 swimmers aged 10 and 11, have qualified at Millfield to compete in The Primary Schools' Team Relay Championships.

They take place at Sheffield on 16th June, with children from Primary Schools across England competing in the English School's Swimming Association (ESSA) Gala.

As it is a significant expense for the seven local families to take the children to Sheffield to compete, Carbis Bay Hotel & Estate are sponsoring the team to assist with the costs of travel and accommodation.

One of the parents, Rachel Perkin, explains:

“We are so proud of our daughter, Beth, and all of her team, for qualifying to compete in the ESSA Gala. They worked really hard to get to this level and are over the moon to be able to go on to the championships. All ofthe families will need to travel to Sheffield the day before and stay overnight, so that the children are ready to compete on the 16th June. This is quite a cost for us all, so we approached some local businesses to see if they might be able to help by way of sponsorship.”

Rachel continued, “We were delighted when Carbis Bay Hotel & Estate quickly responded with an offer from Stephen and Jose Baker, owners of the hotel, who wanted to support our children in representing their school and our town.  On behalf of all seven families, we would like to say a huge “thank you” to them”.

Stephen Baker, owner of Carbis Bay Hotel & Estate is proud to sponsor the team saying:

“As a parent, I know it is such a proud moment when your children perform to the best of their ability and you are delighted for them when they reach the next level of a competition. I heard that their families need to raise in the region of £700 for their travel and accommodation expenses, so I am pleased to be able to help towardsthese costs in order to encourage the team to go forward. I wish the children the very best of luck, but most of all, have a great time!”

The 24th ESSA Primary Schools' Team Championships will be held on Saturday 16th June 2018 at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield.

St Uny Church of England Academy Swim Team will compete in the “Medium Schools Section” which is for schools with a combined total of between 61 & 100 in curriculum years 5 & 6; competing in both the Freestyle team competition and the Mixed Stroke team competition.

Each competition consists of a team of four, and St Uny Church of England Academy have two girls and two boys in each of the teams, with one boy competing in both.
